If you drive to a different hospital every few months as an NHS doctor in training, you can claim tax back on those miles. This guide takes you from a folder of payslips to a finished claim, one tick at a time.
Start with step 1Tick what is true for you.
These five ticks are only a quick check. They are not counted in your progress.
A rough guess before you start. Example numbers shown. Change them to yours.
Put everything in the my-documents folder inside the project. Nothing in that folder is ever published.
You are helping me prepare an HMRC claim for the miles I drove to NHS hospital placements (mileage allowance relief). Use the tool in this folder. First read AGENTS.md and follow it exactly. My documents are in the my-documents folder. Rules: - Keep everything on my computer. Do not upload anything. - Never change or move my original files. - Stop and wait for me at every checkpoint. - Never invent data. If something is missing, tell me and ask. - Explain things in plain English. I am not technical. - This is a calculation aid, not tax advice. Start with step 0: give me a short plan, and check that python3 and pdftotext are installed. Ask before installing anything.
The assistant stops and waits at each of these. Nothing moves on until you reply.
Everything is in my-documents/tax-claim.
Do this before you file. Write down the date, the adviser's name and any reference.
You have 4 years after each tax year ends. The days left are counted from today.
| Tax year | Last day to claim | Time left | Filed |
|---|
The newest year can only be filed after 5 April, once the tax year has ended.
The scripts in this project never send anything anywhere. They run on your computer.
The AI app you choose will read your documents to help you. Its own privacy terms apply, so check them first.
Your documents and results stay in my-documents, which git ignores, so they are never published by accident.
It cannot tell you for certain that a hospital counts as a temporary workplace. It flags risks. Check with HMRC or an accountant.
It estimates days from working days and leave unless you give it rotas.
It reads ESR payslips only, and does not include Scottish tax bands.
